What kind of philosophy does Horace suggest in his Epistles? If his project is conduct, a sub-category of ethics, then how does he interact with others?
That Horace appreciates the mundane (i.e. making poetry out of “nothing much”) & that he approaches other people (most of whom are unknowns to us) with an open, egalitarian spirit––these are well established facts. But what about those moments of crisis, such as in Epistle 1.1, when he doubts his abilities? What about the verse letters written to another poet? What form of mentorship does he illustrate (one in line with decens)?
